#weekoftumblr — A Guide to the Features on Oberlin's Tumblr

I've declared this the #weekoftumblr — it's the thing that's absorbing much of my week and I've decided to write a post about something Tumblr related every day this week. Below is a brief guide to the cool things happening on Tumblr in the name of Oberlin. As the editor of the college’s Tumblr blog, I know what’s there, but I realize that perhaps you don’t. Time to share!

What you’ll see if you visit our Tumblr.

If you visit our Tumblr page, you’ll see all that fun changing bloggy stuff on the left side of the page. That stuff changes often (like every few hours), but the right side of the page is equally important, because that’s where we have some excellent features to make your Tumbling (and Oberlin-related social media-ing) even more fun.

ALLTHE FEATURES!!

First and most importantly, you can learn about our Tumblr. It’s everything we find cool about Oberlin, and I encourage people to tag their content with #oberlin tag, to ask us lots of questions, and to get in touch with me if you want to talk.

You can also ask us all the questions you might ever have when it comes to Oberlin… and let me tell you, we get a lot of mileage out of this feature. Sometimes it takes me a little bit of time to get through all the questions that come to our inbox, but I want to assure that the best and most accurate answer gets out there — if you asked us a question, then I want you to have the correct answer. We get variations of some specific questions quite a bit, and this is why we also have the FAQ tag right up there, too.

Next we have all the relevant links to all our other sites — most of them social (of course). Tumblr might be your cup of tea, or perhaps you ended up here by accident, but regardless of how you got to us, if you want to explore more of Oberlin, you definitely can use Tumblr as your gateway to the rest of what we do online.

I also list that I’m the maintainer of this Tumblr. More on that in a previous webteam blog post.

There are also the amazing Oberaffiliates (official presences on Tumblr) and Oberrelated (Oberfolks and Oberthings on Tumblr) that might strike your fancy as well. Look ‘em up! We tend to reblog a handful of posts coming from here, but you might like some of them for your own personal Tumbl-log.

ALLTHE FEATURES (con edition)!!

My esteemed cohort Will manages the Oberlin Conservatory Tumblr, and if you’re into music, performance, and awesome stuff made by awesome people, this is a place for you. He’s taken a similar approach to additional features as I have on the college Tumblr, but with an added awesome element: the ability to submit something to the conservatory Tumblr. Since the Oberlin College Tumblr is a collector of all things cool (much like the college, you know?), the conservatory is all about showcasing amazingly professional things done by its musical constituents — and if you’re doing something cool, sometimes you just gotta tell someone. Now you can! Do it!

Hmm… what other cool things can I tell you about? How about…

Tags are the greatest. More on this later.

  • Underneath each post, you’ll see a list of tags. I’ll get more into the greatness that is Tumblr tagging later, but for now, here’s what you need to know: each tag is actually a link to every single other thing tagged with that tag within our Tumblr page. These tags help us internally, but also externally, so that our content is associated with these particular tags all over Tumblr. It can help you discover more Oberlin related things on our blog, but if you’re clicking on the tags from within your dashboard (if you’re a Tumblr user already), you’ll find even more things, and Oberlin’s a part of that bigger conversation.
